England have veritably cruised through Euro 2016 qualifying to date, and are one of only two teams to have won every single one of their matches so far (the other, rather oddly, is Slovakia). Their impressive run of form has left them six points clear of second-placed Switzerland and nine above the third-place playoff spot currently occupied by Slovenia. It means Roy Hodgson’s side could well book their place in France next summer with a win away at San Marino on Saturday.

England could book their place at next summer’s European Championships with a win over San Marino on Saturday.

They should certainly have little problem in doing so, with San Marino one of the worst teams in the qualification process. The tiny country -- with a population that could be crammed into Wembley thrice over -- have a national team made of part-timers, and haven’t scored a single competitive goal since a 5-1 defeat to Poland two years ago. Their all-time top scorer, Andy Selva, has scored a mammoth eight goals in 70 appearances. It’s no surprise they’re sat rock bottom of the qualification group.
When they last met
It took England 25 minutes to open the scoring when these sides met at Wembley in October, but after Phil Jagielka’s opener, the floodgates opened. Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Andros Townsend all hit the back of the net, before San Marino’s woes were compounded by an Alessandro Della Valle own goal with just over 10 minutes left on the clock. Go easy on him folks: he works in a ceramics shop by day.
Key player: Wayne Rooney (England)
Almost everyone has now been forced to accept the harsh truth that Wayne Rooney is no longer a very good footballer, but there’s not a chance in hell that England boss Hodgson will dispense with his captain. That means Rooney could well score the requisite goals in this match to become the Three Lions’ all-time leading goalscorer: he’s currently level with Gary Lineker, and only one behind the leader Bobby Charlton.
