Spain will look to consolidate their place at the top of their Euro 2016 qualifying group when they take on Macedonia on Tuesday.

Spain’s win over Slovakia on the weekend has seen them move to the top of their Euro 2016 qualifying group for the first time since the campaign started. Now that they’re up there it’s hard to see them slipping, not least because they still have to play two of the group’s minnows, Macedonia and Luxembourg. Their final game away in Ukraine will prove a tougher test, but by then they’ll be hoping to have their spot in France signed and sealed.

They travel to the Macedonian capital of Skopje to play the first of their last three matches on Tuesday, and anything other than a comfortable win would come as a big surprise. Macedonia sit rock bottom of the group having picked up just three points from their seven matches, and suffered an embarrassing defeat to Luxembourg (who picked up their first competitive victory in almost two years) last time out.

When they last met

Spain were predictably dominant when these sides met in Valencia last September. They scored twice in two minutes in the game’s first quarter, courtesy of a Sergio Ramos penalty and a Paco Alcácer second. Macedonia pulled one back from the spot just short of the half-hour, but Sergio Busquets restored Spain’s two-goal advantage by the halftime whistle David Silva and Pedro capped the second half with goals as the hosts ran out 5-1 winners.

Key player: David Silva (Spain)

Manchester City playmaker David Silva was hailed as the brains behind Spain’s win over Slovakia on Saturday, with the former Valencia man turning in a man of the match performance. Traditionally seen as a very good player but not quite elite enough to crack Del Bosque’s first team, the 29-year-old may yet enjoy an Indian summer. Good luck keeping him quiet, Macedonia.
