While the 2016 Major League Soccer SuperDraft won’t be on television this year, it’s still a must-watch event for most MLS fans. On Thursday starting at 1 p.m. ET, the 20 MLS teams will take turns picking who they think the top players are among draft-eligible talent, making it one of the biggest dates on the American soccer calendar.
MLS Draft 2016 live stream: How to watch the SuperDraft online
The 2016 MLS SuperDraft is not on TV, but you can watch a stream of the action.
With the increased presence and performance of the MLS Academy system and Homegrown Player program, the SuperDraft's importance is somewhat reduced from what it once was. Still, a lot of the best collegiate talent comes into MLS through this draft, and while there's no obvious heir to Omar Gonzalez or Chad Marshall or Dom Dwyer as high-impact MLS stars who come from the draft, there's a lot of excellent players who can do a lot of good for whatever teams they wind up with.
From Georgetown's Josh Yaro to Wake Forest's Jack Harrison, from North Carolina's Omar Holness to Washington's James Moberg, there are a lot of players in this draft who will excite their fans. The Chicago Fire hold the first pick in the draft and the Portland Timbers have the 20th and final pick of the first round, and they and 18 other MLS teams will be hoping to find the next star for their teams.
On Thursday, we’ll see two rounds of draft picks made, with 41 players overall finding new homes. The final two rounds will be completed via conference call on January 19th, but these first two rounds will see most of the players who make a long-term impact in the league get picked.
Where: Baltimore Convention Center, Baltimore, Maryland
