Chelsea and Everton have had a number of big matches over the years, and Saturday’s tilt in London will certainly be no exception -- though the circumstances might be a bit different than you’re used to seeing. Everton will be looking to climb the Premier League table, with a win giving them the chance to rise as high as eighth depending on other results. Where Chelsea are used to being in the top four and looking to improve their title chances in this matchup, this time they’re on the other end of the table, trying to stay away from the relegation zone.

Chelsea slipped up again midweek, and need to turn around their momentum against Everton to stay well clear of the relegation zone.

Right now Chelsea are in 14th in the EPL table, and they didn’t help themselves at all with a midweek draw with West Brom. Still, form would seem to give Chelsea the edge here -- they haven’t lost in the Premier League since mid-December, and Everton have two losses in that timespan, not winning a game since Boxing Day. Chelsea have also been good at home, with 15 of their 24 points coming at the Bridge, so there’s hope for Guus Hiddink’s men to get the win they need and pull further clear of the relegation zone. Lose, though, and the pressure is only going to mount ever higher.
Key player -- Ross Barkley (Everton)
For Everton, the truth is fairly simple: when Barkley plays as well as he is capable of, they don’t lose. They don’t always win, but they don’t lose. The young playmaker can be viciously efficient on the ball, providing a goalscoring threat of his own while splitting defenders with through balls to his fellow attackers to pounce on. When Barkley doesn’t play well, though, it’s very problematic for Everton -- he loses focus, getting sloppy on the ball, taking poor shots, and not moving well off the ball to provide an option for teammates, or doing enough work in defense. Which version of Barkley we see in this match will have a huge impact on the final result.
Key matchup -- John Terry (Chelsea) vs. Romelu Lukaku (Everton)
Lukaku has been on an explosive goalscoring tear, with ten goals in his last eleven matches across all competitions. That form could be vital for Everton as they try to get a huge win away from home and improve on their 11th place standing in the league -- but he faces a potentially huge roadblock in Terry. While the Chelsea defender lacks the physical edge he once had, his intimate knowledge of Lukaku from many training sessions together will give him a tactical edge that the veteran will certainly look to exploit, and that could wind up being the biggest difference-maker in this match.
