Carlos Alberto, captain 1970 World Cup winning Brazil team, dies at 72

Legendary Brazilian footballer Carlos Alberto has died at the age of 72. He passed away in Rio de Janeiro following a heart attack.

The 1970 Brazilian World Cup team that he captained is widely regarded as the greatest international team of all time. That team is best remembered for Pele’s final moments in competitive international matches and Jairzinho’s dazzling displays on the wing, but Carlos Alberto was a popular leader, an integral part of Brazil’s dazzling style, and he even scored a goal against Italy in the final.

He was handed the nickname “The Captain,” and remained a popular figure on Brazilian TV throughout his life.
