The veteran coach was dismissed late last month amid allegations of malpractice, evidenced in an undercover scoop by newspaper The Telegraph. England U-21 coach Gareth Southgate will step up to the plate in the interim, and look to guide England to their second consecutive World Cup qualifying victory.

They should certainly have what it takes to see off a Malta side that kicked off their Russia 2018 qualifying campaign with a 5-1 defeat at home to Scotland. Not since they saw off Lithuania in a friendly last June have they won a match, and you have to go back to 2013 -- when they won 1-0 in Armenia -- for the last time they earned a competitive victory. Even with England currently in disarray, anything other than a heavy Maltese defeat would come as a big surprise.
