Italy looked solid against Spain, but since they only managed to earn a draw they need to end this international break by picking up a win in their World Cup qualifying group. Perhaps fortunately for Italy, the schedule has them set to visit Macedonia, arguably the weakest team in their group.

Italy need a big win if they’re going to show progress under their new manager.

Macedonia has won just two matches in the last year, and those against Azerbaijan and Montenegro -- hardly bastions of high-quality international players. They used to be a decent international side, but most of their better players aged and moved on, and the younger generation hasn’t done nearly as well for them. They’re not a pushover by any means, but they’ll have to put on a top-shelf performance to challenge Italy.
Of course, this is an Italy team that’s very much in transition, still acclimating to the tactics and methods of Giampiero Ventura brings to the table. They picked up a win in their first group match against Israel, but have yet to convince against a more serious opponent, with that draw against Spain and a heavy loss to France on Ventura’s record. A real dominating display against Macedonia would go a long ways to soothe nerves that fans might be feeling right now -- but if Italy manage to drop points in this match, those nerves could quickly turn to panic.
