England’s caretaker manager Gareth Southgate will look to further his credentials for the full-time role when the Three Lions welcome Spain to Wembley on Tuesday. Southgate has overseen two wins and a draw in his first three games in charge, and his side eased to a 3-0 win at home to Scotland in their latest World Cup qualifier on Friday. Admittedly, this game is only a friendly, but the FA hierarchy are sure to be keeping a close watch on Southgate’s every move.

England host Spain in a friendly at Wembley on Tuesday.

Spain, meanwhile, haven’t lost a competitive match since they were dumped out of the European Championships by Italy back in the summer, and Julen Lopetegui’s side have made a solid start to their World Cup qualifying campaign. They thrashed Macedonia 4-0 on Saturday, and sit joint-top of their group. They may not be quite the force they once were, but they remain one of the most talent-rich nations in world football.

Three big things to know
1. News reports have this week suggested that Southgate is ever closer to landing the England job on a full-time basis. He was handed the role on a temporary basis when the disgraced Sam Allardyce was sacked after just one game in charge, and the lack of outstanding English replacement may well mean that Southgate is as good a gamble as any.
2. These sides last faced off when Spain hosted a friendly in Alicante just over a year ago. On that occasion, Vicente del Bosque’s side grabbed a 2-0 win against Roy Hodgson’s, with Mario Gaspar and Santi Cazorla’s goals coming inside the final 20 minutes of the contest.
3. A few stalwarts of the Spanish national team are missing, including defenders Sergio Ramos and Gerard Piqué, midfielder Andrés Iniesta, and striker Diego Costa. England, however, should be able to name what Southgate feels is their strongest lineup.
