Before the match

The United States men’s national team is in a bit of a sticky situation, though it was partially handed to them by some brutal scheduling. After losing to Mexico in Columbus, they have to get a result in Costa Rica to feel good about their chances of finishing in an automatic World Cup qualifying spot.

And how many times has the USMNT done that in the professional era? Zero. They have one draw away to Costa Rica, with college players in 1985. In five attempts, pro players have lost five times to Los Ticos. Four times in a row, they’ve lost by multiple goals.

Costa Rica, meanwhile, gave themselves a bit of margin for error by posting an away win in Trinidad on Friday. While they’ll expect to beat the United States, it’s no longer a serious problem for them if they don’t.
