The United States men’s national team never does well away to Costa Rica. Steve Sampson, Bruce Arena, and Bob Bradley all saw losses in San Jose before Jurgen Klinsmann rolled around, so a defeat there is no surprise.
Watch Costa Rica decimate the USMNT with 3 goals in 10 minutes
It doesn’t get any worse than this.
But the manner of the defeat was embarrassing for the Americans, as they conceded three goals in just 10 minutes during their 4-0 defeat.
Christian Bolanos, who assisted Los Ticos’ first-half tally, got the string of game-killing goals off to a great start with this header in the 69th minute.

That goal appeared to break the USMNT mentally. They fell apart. After the game, Klinsmann admitted as such.
Klinsmann: "After the second goal the players didn't have the fight to get back into the game. I take full responsibility." #USMNT

A big factor in their collapse was Costa Rica’s introduction of Joel Campbell, perhaps their most talented attacking player. Despite being their star player, he started on the bench against Trinidad and Tobago, too, and had a big effect when he came on, opening up their defense despite not finding the back of the net. But against the USMNT, he used his pace to punish his opponent to the tune of two goals.
The first came off a very bad turnover by John Brooks in the 74th minute.

Four minutes after that, he sprung the offside trap easily and torched the entire American defense, running onto a long ball over the top and finishing off the play.

This was arguably the most embarrassing defeat of Klinsmann’s tenure, and perhaps the USMNT’s worst professional-era performance in the final round of World Cup qualifying. They offered absolutely nothing, and they were taken apart easily.
