Following a disappointing last season, UANL Tigres are looking to get back to their title-winning ways and capture the Apertura crown for the second year in a row. They face Club Leon, a team that last won the title in the spring of 2014 and went to the semifinals of the last tournament, in the Liga MX semifinals.

Can Club León pull off another big upset? Tigres’ injury list is long enough to give them a shot.

The regular season meeting between these two teams was a wild one, with Leon winning, 3-2, at home. Tigres got on the board first, but Leon found the back of the net three times in the final 10 minutes of the first half through three different goal-scorers. Tigres got on the board through an own goal in stoppage time, but couldn’t come all the way back to claim a point.
Leon pulled off a significant upset of top-seeded Tijuana in the first round of Liguilla, while third-seeded Tigres beat rivals Pumas as expected.
Tigres’ injury list is significant. All of Damian Alvarez, Francisco Meza, Lucas Zelarayan, Luis Quinones, Israel Jimenez, and Manuel Viniegra will miss out. However, star striker Andre-Pierre Gignac recently got back to full fitness, and they haven’t had him at his best for much of this season. Guillermo Burdisso and Alexander Mejia are both doubtful, but not certain to miss out for Leon.
