LA Galaxy picks up Jermaine Jones and hires a new coach

The Galaxy is moving on quickly from Bruce Arena and Steven Gerrard.

Following the Colorado Rapids’ elimination from the MLS Cup playoffs, Jermaine Jones quickly tweeted “FREE AGENT BABY” before quickly deleting it. Possibly because of the tackiness of the gesture, but also possibly because he was informed that he was not a free agent.

He’ll get the move he wants anyway, though: the Rapids traded Jones’ MLS rights to the LA Galaxy for a first-round pick. The Galaxy presumably would not have done this without knowing that Jones would agree to sign a contract with them, so expect to see him in LA’s midfield next season.

Jones will be coached by Curt Onalfo, who was officially hired by the Galaxy on Tuesday. You might remember him from his highly unsuccessful stints as the head coach of the then Kansas City Wizards and D.C. United. But Onalfo’s rebuilt his reputation since then, becoming a popular figure within the Galaxy organization for his work as Bruce Arena’s assistant, then as the manager of Galaxy II.
