Twenty-seven-year-old Borussia Mönchengladbach defender Alvaro Dominguez has been forced to retire from soccer due to chronic back injuries, and he doesn’t have anything nice to say about his former club. Dominguez says that he was asked to pay through pain and did not receive adequate medical treatment from Gladbach. He even called their treatment of him inhuman.

“I felt there was an inhumanity towards me [from Borussia] as nobody bothered to check on me or pay my medical bills. I just wanted to have no pain and I know that now I’ll get it. When I have no pain, I’ll be the happiest guy in the world but nobody deserves to be treated in the way I was.”

Dominguez said that after training and playing games, he was in so much pain that he couldn’t do anything but lie in bed, and he needed friends to run errands for him.

Gladbach will put out their side of the story in the coming days, but regardless of whether they accept Dominguez’s account of his injury issues, they’ll be forced to think about how they treat players in the future.
