While a match between Fiorentina and Inter Milan in Florence doesn’t have quite the same cachet or international appeal as Saturday’s title clash between Juventus and Napoli, that doesn’t make this match less interesting or important for Serie A. Whoever wins this battle between two talented-but-inconsistent teams will end the weekend in third place, which grants that team an interesting opportunity.

Fiorentina host Inter Milan in a key battle for positioning in Serie A.

Reason dictates that neither Juventus nor Napoli can keep their hot runs up forever, and when they stumble, the team in third place -- who would have either 49 points if Fiorentina win or 48 if Inter do -- would be close enough in the standings to be well-positioned to take advantage of that slip.
The question, of course, is which team will be in third and if they can keep up the momentum necessary to be in that advantageous position. As noted earlier, neither Inter nor Fiorentina have exactly been a bastion of consistency. Both teams have spent time in first place but were ousted from that spot because they just couldn’t keep up any kind of momentum for long enough to create separation. If they can figure things out now, though, they could have the ability to cause some pretty serious headaches for the top two, and both Inter and Fiorentina certainly have the talent for those headaches to be very painful indeed.
Key player -- Eder (Inter Milan)
Inter are still trying to figure out how to get the most from their newest signing in attack, and so far the process isn’t going all that well. The dynamic forward has played in a couple of different roles in his first three matches for the nerazzurri, but he has yet to score a single goal or register even one assist. He has the skill to help vastly improve Inter’s attack, but until he and his new team figure each other out, that attack could be in a lot of trouble.
Key matchup -- Borja Valero (Fiorentina) vs. Gary Medel (Inter Milan)
Much of Fiorentina’s success this season has been thanks to Valero, who has returned to his usual wonderful midfield form after 18 months or so of looking awfully shaky. His skill in possession is undeniable, and he can create scoring chances for his teammates out of virtually nothing. Taking him out of his comfort zone and restricting his ability to impact the game will be key for Inter’s ability to beat Fiorentina, and with that in mind Medel needs to be glued to his hip. Medel and his bulldog mentality can completely disrupt Valero, staying on his hip all day long and fighting him for every inch of ground. If Medel can neutralize Valero, Fiorentina will have a much, much harder time getting the result they want.
