In a rare treat, Sunday’s edition of the Superclásico will feature two teams playing for something similar. Chivas Guadalajara and Club America both want to make the Liguilla playoffs this season and need a win to reverse their fortunes.

Could Mexico’s biggest rivalry become competitive again?

Chivas haven’t been terrible this season, but haven’t been able to turn their decent performances into wins. They grabbed their first victory of the season last week, moving them up to 13th. Even though they have just one win from nine games, their goal differential is only minus-1 and they’ll move to within three points of a playoff place with a victory in Sunday’s game.
America expected to be near the top of the table, but they had a very average February. Las Aguilas drew Veracruz, 1-1, played a thrilling 3-3 clásico against Cruz Azul, then got throttled by Tigres. They recovered by beating Morelia last week, but they’re only sitting in seventh position.
The last time Chivas beat America at home was in 2011, and America have entered every Superclásico in a higher league position ever since that game. Based on America’s recent struggles, they’ll be hoping this is the tournament where they can turn their rivalry around.
