Luis Suárez finishes as La Liga’s top scorer, dethroning Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi

There’s a new top forward on the planet.

For the first time in six seasons, someone other than Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi has won the Pichichi Trophy as the top scorer in La Liga. Barcelona forward Luis Suárez entered the final round of play on top, then scored a hat trick against Granada to make sure. Here's his third goal.

That was his 40th goal of the season, beating Ronaldo’s 35. Real Madrid’s superstar had two goals in the first half of their season finale against Deportivo La Coruña, but once it was clear that he couldn’t win the Pichichi (and Madrid couldn’t win the league), he was rested for the second half. This is the first time since the 2009-10 season that someone other than Ronaldo or Messi has finished as the top scorer in Spain. In that season, Diego Forlán edged Samuel Eto’o, while Ronaldo scored 26 goals in an injury-shortened season and Messi tallied 23.

Messi and Neymar have had brilliant seasons for Barca, and spurts of true brilliance, but Suárez has been the team’s most consistent player. In addition to his massive La Liga tally, he’s scored five goals in three Copa del Rey appearances, eight in nine UEFA Champions League games and six goals in his five appearances across other smaller competitions. His tally of 59 goals in 52 games with one left to play is among the best scoring totals ever posted by any player at the highest level of the sport, period.
