Liverpool will look to get their hands on their first European trophy in over a decade on Wednesday, when Jürgen Klopp's outfit go head-to-head with Sevilla in the final of the Europa League at St. Jakob-Park in Basel, Switzerland. Rather incredibly, their Spanish opponents head into this match looking to win this tournament for the third consecutive season, and will doubtless be more than confident of doing so.

Liverpool take on Sevilla in the final of the Europa League in Basel on Wednesday.

It has been a fairly disappointing season on the domestic front for both of these sides. Sevilla have been in poor form over the last few months, and have cruised into seventh place in La Liga. Liverpool, on the other hand, appear to follow their steps forward with a couple back. However, with not just the Europa League trophy but also a place in the Champions League at stake for the victor, a win in Basel on Wednesday would certainly make things look a whole lot better.
Key player, Liverpool: Philippe Coutinho
Philippe Coutinho hasn’t scored a single goal in his last six appearances, though Sevilla certainly shouldn’t make the error of allowing the Brazilian time and space on the ball. The 23-year-old has enjoyed his best season in the Premier League yet, often proving himself capable of turning a match single-handedly. He could well be the man making the difference again in Basel on Wednesday.
Key player, Sevilla: Kévin Gameiro
Sevilla striker Gameiro appears to be something of a late bloomer. Before the current season, the French international looked a serviceable if unspectacular forward, and one unlikely to challenge the very best defenses. Indeed, the fact Paris Saint-Germain let him go appeared evidence of that fact. However, he’s chipped in with a tidy 24 goals this season, and at 29 is enjoying the best campaign of his career. Watch out, Liverpool.
Liverpool injuries and suspensions
Out: Jordan Rossiter (hamstring); Divock Origi (ankle); Danny Ward (knee); Mamadou Sakho (suspended). In doubt: None.
Sevilla injuries and suspensions
Out: Marco Andreolli, Michael Krohn-Dehli (knee). In doubt: Diogo Figueiras (abductor); Federico Fazio (ankle); Nico Pareja (hamstring); Benoît Trémoulinas (knee).
Liverpool still have four players sidelined, though only one will cause consternation for Klopp. That’s center back Sakho, who is suspended after failing a drug test earlier in the season.
Sevilla, meanwhile, have been a little more unfortunate on the injury front. Emery will have to do without veterans Andreolli and Krohn-Dehli, while four further players face late fitness tests. The Spanish side will be hoping to have fullbacks Figueiras and Trémoulinas and center halves Fazio and Pareja back from injury; otherwise, they’ll be extremely short-staffed at the back.
