The United States’ lineup is out for their Copa America tune-up friendly with Ecuador, but the 11 players starting on the pitch might raise more questions than answers.
USA vs. Ecuador friendly confirmed lineups
The USMNT is bringing out an intriguing starting lineup to help prepare for the Copa America.

The presence of Steve Birnbaum in the lineup suggests that Jurgen Klinsmann is considering a bigger role for him than being the last defender on the bench. Given the strides that Birnbaum has taken of late in his development, that could prove to be a very good decision for the strength of the squad. The apparent 4-3-3 formation is promising as well, giving the team a more defensive-minded midfielder to play behind Michael Bradley and Jermaine Jones in order to grant them greater freedom to attack.
Not everything is perfect, though -- Graham Zusi starting on the right wing doesn’t seem to offer much to the side in a match like this, especially considering his mediocre club form. Gyasi Zardes and his lackluster first touch seems like a curious choice to support Clint Dempsey as well, with many fans hoping that Christian Pulisic was going to be given a chance to show off what he can do in this match.
United States: Brad Guzan; DeAndre Yedlin, Steve Birnbaum, John Brooks, Fabian Johnson; Jermaine Jones, Kyle Beckerman, Michael Bradley; Graham Zusi, Clint Dempsey, Gyasi Zardes
Ecuador: Alexander Domínguez; Juan Carlos Paredes, Gabriel Achiller, Fricson Erazo, Cristian Ramírez; Jefferson Montero, Christian Noboa, Carlos Gruezo, Angel Mena; Miller Bolaños, Enner Valencia
