John Stones might be the most expensive defender ever with Barcelona, both Manchester clubs chasing him
Everton’s young star disappointed last season. It won’t matter. His stock has only gone up.

Did you watch Everton’s late-season meltdown? It was bad. John Stones, in particular, was a big part of how bad the Toffees were. But John Stones is also a 21-year-old with more raw talent than just about any defender in the world, so Everton are still going to get a ton of money for him. The Mirror is among those reporting that every dang big club ever is interested.
José Mourinho and Pep Guardiola are reportedly enamored with Stones, with both wanting to bring him to Manchester. The spiritual homes of those two coaches, Chelsea and Barcelona, want him too. And if all four clubs are serious, it’s likely two things are true: One, Stones is getting sold, and two, the fee will be larger than the £38 million bid Everton reportedly rejected last summer.
The world’s best coaches and sporting directors see Stones’ struggles as having to do with his coach and teammates, not him. Time will tell if he’s worthy of being the most expensive defender of all time, but it’s certainly interesting that his stock hasn’t dropped one bit despite a poor campaign.
