If you were hoping Jurgen Klinsmann would get adventurous with his team to face Argentina, we’re very sorry. The United States has replaced their three suspended players with the most predictable, safe options possible. Chris Wondolowski, Graham Zusi and Kyle Beckerman come into the team, while DeAndre Yedlin returns from suspension.
USA vs. Argentina lineups
The USMNT has gone conservative.
Argentina starts with Lionel Messi on the right side of a 4-3-3, so Fabian Johnson will see a lot of him on that flank. However, Messi isn’t going to stick to that position. He moves around all over the pitch, so containing him will be a team effort. And with how well Gonzalo Higuaín has been finishing for club and country, it’ll be important for the Americans to make sure they’re not leaving space open for him to run into as they’re chasing Messi around.
United States starting XI (4-4-2): Brad Guzan; Fabian Johnson, John Brooks, Geoff Cameron, DeAndre Yedlin; Gyasi Zardes, Kyle Beckerman, Michael Bradley, Graham Zusi; Clint Dempsey, Chris Wondolowski
Argentina starting XI (4-3-3): Sergio Romero; Marcos Rojo, Romero Funes Mori, Nicolas Otamendi, Gabriel Mercado; Javier Mascherano, Éver Banega, Augusto Fernández; Ezequiel Lavezzi, Gonzalo Higuaín, Lionel Messi
Kickoff is just after 9 p.m. ET from Houston. You can catch the game on FS1 and Univision.
