Whatever happens in Saturday's Euro 2016 first knockout round clash between Croatia and Portugal, the tournament will lose one of its very best players. In the case of the former, it's Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modrić; for the latter, it's his domestic teammate Cristiano Ronaldo. It's these players that are sure to dominate the narrative of the encounter.
Euro 2016 live stream, Croatia vs. Portugal: Time, TV schedule and how to watch online
Euro 2016 will lose one of its best players as Croatia take on Portugal in the first knockout round.

However, Croatia certainly aren't a one-man team, and they've been one of the most impressive sides in France so far this summer. The appointment of journeyman coach Ante Čačić last year caused concern, though so far he's confounding all critics. They defeated Spain and Turkey en route to topping their group, and guaranteed themselves a spot in the easier half of the draw as a result.
Portugal, on the other hand, have struggled to impress once again at a major tournament. Fernando Santos' side limped to third place in a group containing Hungary, Iceland and Austria, and though Ronaldo has been his lively self, he's struggled to take his chances. With seemingly no one else able to shoulder the creative burden, it's a very worrying development. Without doubt it's Croatia who head into this contest as the favourites.
