Roy Hodgson resigns after England’s embarrassing loss to Iceland

England’s manager says it’s time for someone else to take over the Three Lions.

In the wake of the 2-1 defeat to Iceland that knocked his team out of Euro 2016, England manager Roy Hodgson has announced that he will resign from his job. In the television interview immediately following the loss, Hodgson said that it was time for someone else to drive England forward.

England entered the Euros with more hype than they’ve received in the last decade, thanks to an influx of exciting young talent that shined in the Premier League this season. However, Hodgson failed to get the most out of that talent as his team sputtered. They failed to win their group, then lost in regular time to Iceland on Monday, conceding two goals after going ahead on a 3rd-minute penalty.

If you’re wondering who the next England boss will be, your guess is as good as anyone else’s. On the PaddyPower odds, the pool of potential replacements looks thin.

Much like Hodgson, Fabio Capello, Steve McClaren and Sven-Goran Eriksson before them, the new England boss will be tasked with placating a despondent fanbase and getting an underachieving group of players to finally make a deep run in a tournament. England has not reached the semifinal of a major tournament held outside their own borders since 1990.
