South Korea vs. Mexico 2016: Final score 1-0, El Tri out of men’s Olympic soccer tournament

Defending gold medalists Mexico have been dumped out of the men’s Olympic soccer tournament in very unlucky fashion. Despite generating 19 shots to South Korea’s four in their final group stage game, El Tri lost 1-0, and heads home after finishing third in their group.

The winning goal was scored by Kwon Chang-Hoon, who picked up his third of the tournament with a brilliant strike in the 77th minute. He beat multiple Mexico defenders on a long run along the top of the box before ripping a left-footed shot into the back of the net from the edge of the area.

As El Tri desperately tried to fight their way back into the match, their frustrations got the better of them. In stoppage time, Hirving Lozano shoved a Korean player who he thought was faking an injury to waste time, and was shown a red card for his troubles.

South Korea has won the group and will be joined in the quarterfinals by Germany, who finished second ahead of Mexico and Fiji.
