This 2016 Olympics women’s soccer tournament match brings us two quarterfinalists who didn’t exactly enjoy as smooth a path to this round as they would have hoped. Germany have one of the best women’s teams in the world and China are no slouches themselves, but both teams won only a single group match apiece. Both China and Germany also lost a game apiece, both tough losses to some of the elite in the women’s international soccer world, and they could use a big boost of momentum for this match.

With the stakes at their highest so far in the tournament now that we’re in single-elimination matches, both sides are going to need their stars to step up. For Germany, that means an attack headlined by Alexandra Popp and Anja Mittag will need to play better than it has since their group-opening win against Zimbabwe. For China, they desperately need Li Ying to reclaim the creative form that made her one of the breakout stars of the Women’s World Cup a year ago.
This match is going to be closely played and can swing either way on a moment’s notice. Don’t take your eyes off this one for a second.
