The 2016 Olympics women’s soccer tournament has reached the quarterfinal round, and the United States are kicking it off with a big matchup against Sweden. The last time these two teams squared off was in last summer’s Women’s World Cup, when they battled to a scoreless draw during the group stage. Obviously this match can’t end without a winner, so both teams will need to find a way to improve on that result this time around.
USA vs. Sweden 2016 live stream: How to watch USWNT online in Olympic soccer quarterfinals
The USWNT have reached the quarterfinal round as they look to get one step closer to their fourth straight Olympic gold medal.
It’s worth noting that the USWNT used that draw a year ago as incentive and motivation to fix a few flaws the team had been struggling with, both in tactics and player usage, and from there they surged into unstoppable form to claim the World Cup title. They haven’t much let up on that form since then -- Tuesday’s draw with Colombia aside -- and they’re a much stronger team now than they were in that match a year ago because of it.
Sweden, on the other hand, have been struggling a bit of late, only squeaking by South Africa in their first group match before getting pummeled by Brazil and playing to a scoreless draw with China. Key players Caroline Seger and Lotta Schelin haven’t played up to their usual standard, but they need to find a way to lift themselves and their teammates up in a hurry if they’re going to find a way to upset the United States.
