The most impressive performers of the women’s Olympic soccer tournament thus far have been Canada. Their reward? A quarterfinal date with France, the No. 3 ranked team in the world.

France might have the most talented first XI on earth, but they haven’t been able to turn that into major tournament success yet. Their group stage game against the United States was a perfect example of what makes them so frustrating -- they were the better team for most of the game, but they lacked the Americans’ direct passing and killer instinct around goal.
Les Bleus were vastly improved against New Zealand, but they’re still slight underdogs with Canada’s Christine Sinclair on top of her game and an athletic young team around her. First time Olympian and first year pro Janine Beckie is also in great form, co-leading the tournament with three goals so far.
