For the second consecutive Olympics, Canada will have a chance to capture a medal. And for the second consecutive Olympics, they’ve stopped France from getting one. Les Bleus will retain their status as world soccer’s greatest underachievers after Canada pulled off a 1-0 win in the quarterfinals.
Canada vs. France 2016: Final score 1-0, Sophie Schmidt fires Canadians into Olympics medal rounds
For the second Olympics in a row, Canada has knocked out France.

Midfielder Sophie Schmidt scored the winning goal, but it was the assist by 21-year-old Janine Beckie that was the story of the match. She beat two defenders with dribbling moves on the right wing before hitting a cross that let Schmidt finish from close range.
While France had more possession and more shots, they had the same problem against Canada that they did against the United States in group play. They lacked a cutting edge in the box, and Canadian goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe never had to make a difficult save. France’s best chance came at the end of the first half -- a near-own goal that came off the head of Christine Sinclair and hit the crossbar.
Canada will go on to face Germany in the semifinal. Though they’ve won the World Cup twice, Germany has never made it to the gold medal match at an Olympics.
