Canada won their first four matches at the Olympics, including one against Germany in the group stage. But the Germans were more organized for the rematch on Tuesday and advanced to the gold medal game with a 2-0 win.

With Alexandra Popp, Anja Mittag and Dzsenifer Marozsan struggling to find the back of the net and Simone Laudehr injured, Melanie Behringer has stepped up into a key role. She scored the goal that would go down as the winner for the second match in a row, converting a first half penalty. Popp won it when she was taken down in the box by Kadeisha Buchanan, and Behringer converted her tournament-leading fifth goal.
Sara Däbritz scored the clinching goal in the 59th minute, and it was a stunner. She picked up the ball from Mittag at the top of the box, made space for herself and powered a shot past Stephanie Labbe at her near post.
Canada fought hard to get back into the match and actually ended up with more shots than Germany. Their best came in the 68th minute, when Diana Matheson forced Almuth Schult into an excellent save. But Les Rouges couldn’t get on the board, and will have to settle for a place in the bronze medal match against Brazil. Germany will take on Sweden for the gold.
