Real Madrid is coming off a tumultuous season, but one that ultimately ended with a Champions League triumph. Now, with a more stable offseason behind them, they’ll be looking to push for multiple trophies. On Sunday, they kick off their La Liga season against Real Sociedad.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema are hurt, but Real Madrid still has plenty of firepower to beat Real Sociedad.

Replacing Rafa Benitez with Zinedine Zidane midseason turned out to be a spectacular move for Los Merengues. However, despite becoming champions of Europe, one-trophy seasons are standard for Madrid. They were disqualified from Copa del Rey and finished behind Barcelona in La Liga, something they’ll want to rectify. They didn’t make any dramatic moves in the transfer market, though, and are counting on youngster Marco Asensio making a serious impact in his first season as a full-time Real Madrid first team player.
Real Sociedad was disappointing last season, and replaced David Moyes with Eusebio Sacristán in November. He did well to get them up to 9th place, but they still finished with a negative goal differential. This season, La Real will be targeting a top-seven finish or a big cup run to return to European competition.
Key player: Asier Illarramendi
Former Real Madrid midfielder Illarramendi made the move back to his boyhood club Real Sociedad in 2015 and quickly reestablished himself as the team’s top central midfielder. La Real will lose the possession battle on Sunday, but they’ll need Illarramendi to both launch dangerous counter attacks quickly and occasionally put his foot on the ball to slow the game down and give his defense some relief.
Recent history
Real Madrid won both of the meetings between these two clubs last season, including a 1-0 victory in San Sebastian during the last month of the campaign. The last time Real Sociedad defeated Real Madrid in the league was in August of 2014, when they recorded a 4-2 victory at home. The core of this Txuri-Urdin side has remained together over the last few years, so most of the players who dressed on that day will be available for Eusebio on Sunday as well.
