The rule of hat tricks reigns again in MLS, as D.C. United's Patrick Mullins notched one in a win against the Chicago Fire and as a result won SB Nation's MLS Player of the Week award for Week 25.

And while it may sound like getting a hat trick is no big deal, of course it is. Add to that the instant impact Mullins, a third-year pro on his third MLS team, has had since joining D.C. in mid-July, and the honor is more than warranted. Despite bouncing around from the New England Revolution to New York City FC to now D.C. United, Mullins had always played well in the limited playing time he got and it was more a matter of finding the right situation for him. In D.C., he's finally with a team desperate for scoring and willing to play American attackers who proved themselves at the college level, something his first two teams didn't always do.
Frankly, Mullins' win was a runaway result, too, with only FC Dallas winger Michael Barrios registering double-digit points in the vote alongside him.
