In their opening game against Portugal, Argentina were uncharacteristically poor, struggling to create chances and giving up soft goals. They still weren’t at their best on Sunday, but did enough to pick up all three points in a 2-1 win over Algeria.
Argentina vs. Algeria 2016: Final score 2-1, Albiceleste wonderkids star in first men’s Olympic soccer win
Jonathan Calleri and Angel Correa looked like future senior stars for Argentina on Sunday.

Two of Argentina’s hottest young stars, Jonathan Calleri and Angel Correa, produced big. They set each other up, recording a goal and an assist each.
Just before halftime, Argentine defender Victor Cuesta was shown a second yellow card, forcing his team to play with 10 men. But despite that, Correa scored the opening goal of the match in the 47th minute, getting on the end of a flicked header by Calleri.
Algeria pulled level in the 64th minute, with Sofiane Bendebka scoring an impressive goal from the edge of the penalty area. But just three minutes after that, Ayoub Abdellaoui was sent off, making the match 10 vs. 10 and giving Argentina an avenue to the win. Calleri took advantage, scoring the winner in the 70th minute off a gorgeous pass by Correa.
This result ensured that Portugal would advance to the knockout rounds from Group D while eliminating Algeria, their next opponents. Argentina faces Honduras, who also has three points but leads on goal differential. That means the Albiceleste need to win to advance, while Honduras just needs a draw.
