Manchester City and Juventus announce surprise star omissions from their Champions League squads

Post-transfer deadline squad lists are out, and the biggest surprises came from Manchester City and Juventus. Neither had any shocking revelations in their league squads, but since Champions League squads are more restrictive, they had some tough choices to make. City has omitted Yaya Toure from their Champions League squad list, while Juve has left out fan favorite Stephan Lichtsteiner.

Toure has been linked to moves away from City in recent transfer windows, but opted to stay despite a change in management and the arrival of İlkay Gündoğan in the transfer market. He’ll now be questioning that decision to stick around, unlike his teammates Joe Hart, Eliaquim Mangala, Samir Nasri and Wilfried Bony, who got the message that they wouldn’t have a big role at City. Lichtsteiner’s omission is even more shocking, even though he’s not as big of a name. The only true right back in the Bianconeri squad is 33-year-old Dani Alves. Expect Juventus to play a back three with Juan Cuadrado on the right a few times in Europe.

On the other end of the spectrum, Manchester United has surprisingly included Bastian Schweinsteiger in their Premier League squad after exiling him and telling him he had no future at the club.
