Midweek rounds of Bundesliga action are always interesting, and this round brings us a truly fascinating matchup. Borussia Dortmund and VfL Wolfsburg are two talented teams hoping to become more, to really push Bayern for the Bundesliga title this season. As they go head-to-head, the winner could get a real kick of momentum and strong positioning toward that goal, giving this match a lot of meaning for an early season game.

Dortmund are hoping to build on last season’s success, when they bounced back from a bad season to finish second in the Bundesliga and impress the majority of observers. They went through a lot of change this summer, though, with several major players leaving the club, getting replaced by a slough of up-and-coming talents -- and the dramatic return of homegrown star Mario Gotze from archrival Bayern Munich. So far it’s been working well for them, as evidenced by their combined 12-0 score in their last two matches, and they’ll be hoping to carry on that momentum for a big win on the road against Wolfsburg.

Speaking of Die Wölfe, the team in green struggled last season to follow up on their successes from the year before but still represent one of the better sides in an ever-more-competitive Bundesliga. They sit just one point back of Dortmund and four back of league-leading Bayern Munich and Hertha BSC, and a win over Dortmund that most analysts would consider to be an upset would make a major statement of intent for Wolfsburg -- they want to be one of the serious, competitive teams in the league, and beating Dortmund would show that they can be just that.
