This midweek round of La Liga action brings us one big highlight match to enjoy, with Barcelona taking on Atlético Madrid in a match that will be crucial for early-season positioning in La Liga, and could prove massively important for both clubs come the end of the season with how close the top clubs have finished the last couple of years.

Both Barcelona and Atléti have had some bumps early in their respective league campaigns, but they both looked strong last weekend in commanding wins that saw both teams score five goals against their respective opponents. They both seem to be rounding into strong form at the moment, potentially setting up a wildly entertaining match between two of the best teams in Europe.

But this match is about a lot more than a single game. In the last three years, the top two teams in the La Liga table have finished a combined six points apart, with the widest margin being the three point lead Atléti held over Barcelona at the end of the campaign three years ago. There’s little reason to expect anything different at the end of this season, making each of these matches between Barca, Atléti, and Real Madrid vitally important. If there’s a similarly small gap between the league winner and the loser of this match, you’ll be able to point back to this game as the reason why the winner is lifting the La Liga trophy high.
