Mexico has a perfect record in World Cup qualifying and they’re likely to keep it intact on Tuesday, but their fans would like to see them do it in a bit of style. Honduras, meanwhile, would like just the opposite, as they fight to make the final round of World Cup qualifying.

El Tri is coming off a 3-1 away win, but they were trailing at halftime against El Salvador, which fans were thoroughly unimpressed with. Honduras fans are in better spirits after a comeback victory over Canada that kept them in control of their own destiny, but they’ll need a good performance on Tuesday to stay ahead of the Canadians and make it to the Hex.
What’s at stake?
For Mexico, nothing but pride and their coach’s job. Fans have turned on Juan Carlos Osorio after El Tri’s big loss to Chile at Copa America and a poor first half in El Salvador last week. Mexico’s struggles at the Olympics didn’t help, even though that team had a different coach. Mexico knows they’re heading to the Hex in first place, but they could really use an emphatic win. Honduras currently has a three-point and five-goal cushion on Canada, so they can lose and still progress, but they need to make sure the game doesn’t get out of hand.
Last meeting
These teams met in San Pedro Sula during the second matchday, with Mexico scoring a 2-0 win over Honduras, opening the door for Canada to potentially upset Los Catrachos and earn a hex berth. But the two players who scored in that game -- Jesus "Tecatito" Corona and Jurgen Damm -- are not in this El Tri squad.
