Southampton and Liverpool go head to head at St. Mary's on Wednesday in the first leg of their EFL Cup semifinal. Both sides come into the game on the back of disappointing FA Cup draws; Southampton were held 2-2 by Norwich City, while Liverpool's goalless tie at home to Plymouth Argyle was one of the biggest surprises of the third round.

However, Jürgen Klopp did rotate heavily for his side's clash with the Pilgrims, meaning he should have a first team raring to go away at Southampton. The German was in charge as his side were beaten by Manchester City in the final of this tournament last season, and they may well still be smarting from that defeat. Southampton, meanwhile, may be a little less fresh, and have endured a difficult festive period: Claude Puel's side have won just two of their last nine in all competitions.

Three big things to know
1. Southampton will be without several regulars, including Charlie Austin, Sofiane Boufal, and Matt Targett. Captain José Fonte will remain sidelined as long as his future is unresolved; the Portuguese international has recently handed in a transfer request. His compatriot and defensive partner Cédric Soares faces a late fitness test.
2. Liverpool will certainly be without the injured Danny Ings, Jordan Henderson, and Joël Matip, while former Saint Sadio Mané is away at the Africa Cup of Nations. James Milner remains an early doubt.
3. A rivalry has emerged between Southampton and Liverpool over recent seasons, with the Merseysiders having taken to plundering the Saints' squad. Four of Liverpool's first-team regulars, Nathaniel Clyne, Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana, and Mané, all arrived at Anfield fresh from stints on the south coast. That's sure to give this game some extra spice.
