One of the most fun stories in La Liga during the first half of the season was the unexpected rise of Las Palmas. In their second season back in Spain’s top division after almost a decade and a half toiling away beneath it, they’ve been a fun, exciting team that’s caught a lot of attention and sparked a lot of dreams. This weekend, they have an opportunity to take a bad stretch for Barcelona and potentially make it a lot worse.

Barcelona have been in a bit of a tailspin of late, requiring a dramatic second-leg comeback to beat Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey and drawing to a wildly unimpressive Villarreal side last weekend. The Catalans have looked flat and rather uninspired of late, like they haven’t really gotten back in the swing of things after the winter break yet.

That gives Las Palmas an opportunity to create a huge upset at the Camp Nou, and any points the upstart team can pull together on the road against a giant like that will be a huge lift to them. If they come out strong and catch Barcelona napping again — which hardly seems unlikely given the last couple of weeks for Barca — this could wind up being a match to remember.
