Millwall FC has been at their home of The Den since 1993 and in southeast London since 1885. They were on the verge of being evicted and losing their home to development, but the mayor of the London Borough of Lewisham, where The Den sits, has announced that a compulsory purchase order to take over the stadium will not go forward.

A CPO is the legal function in the U.K. most similar to what Americans know as eminent domain. Millwall supporters’ opposition to the planned redevelopment of the area around The Den and reporting on the proposed developers made the plan politically unpopular, leading to its scrapping.

Read this interview with a joint chairman of the Association of Millwall supporters and a resident of the area on what defeating the CPO means to them, and this story on a small local clubs’ fight to just exist in the current economic client.
