It’s time for the new era of the United States men’s national team to get underway, with Bruce Arena preparing to manage his first friendly in his second stint as the national team’s boss. His first challenge will be to take his winter camp squad and use it to face Serbia in San Diego, and hopefully it will be a match that will teach us a few things about Arena’s squad and ideas for the team.
USA vs. Serbia 2017 live stream: How to watch the USMNT’s friendly online
The first of two winter friendlies is here for the USMNT, and there are hopefully some lessons to learn for Bruce Arena and company.

Now, it does have to be kept in mind that because this is a winter friendly outside the usual FIFA international match windows, both countries are fielding squads of significantly reduced strength. Both national teams are fielding something more like a B team, using only domestically-based players not actively involved in club matches, with a handful of out-of-country players given permission by their teams to leave mixed in.
There’s still plenty of talent and interesting players to keep an eye on in the USMNT squad, though, and it’s going to be fascinating to see how Arena uses it. He’ll be fully aware of the players he’s missing, of course, but this match represents a chance for players who have been out, on or even past the fringes for the past few years to impress him and earn a role in the national team going forward. These players are going to do everything they can to seize the opportunity.
