Mexico travel to Honduras on Tuesday to take on a Los Catrachos side that still has everything to fight for on the final matchday of CONCACAF’s qualifying tournament for the World Cup. The Hex has come down to this final day, with Mexico already qualified and Honduras hanging on for dear life — and with a slim chance to knock Mexico’s arch-rivals out of the World Cup.

Mexico are already in the World Cup, and a win for Honduras would give them a chance to make it to the promised land.

The situation is fairly simple: Honduras have 10 points, even with fourth-place Panama — who currently hold the inter-confederation playoff spot — on points but sitting five goals behind them in goal differential. They’re two points behind the United States in the final automatic qualification place. It would take a minor miracle — losses for both Panama and the USMNT while beating Mexico — for Honduras to go straight to the World Cup, but they would certainly take a win over Mexico and any dropped points for Panama, or a draw with Mexico and a loss for Panama, to take that playoff spot.
But Honduras’ record against El Tri does not suggest that they can make that happen. In 40 all-time meetings, they’ve beaten Mexico just seven times and drawn just nine, and haven’t beaten them since 2013. In fact, that 2-1 win during that cycle’s World Cup qualifying was the last time Honduras even scored against Mexico, a span that includes 3-0 and 1-0 losses in the past four months.
