It’s been 59 years since Wales has qualified for a World Cup, while the Republic of Ireland hasn’t made it since 2002. But one of the two will keep themselves alive in 2018 World Cup qualifying on Monday, while the other will be eliminated.

Wales and Ireland both still have a chance to beat Serbia to first place in Group D and an automatic qualifying spot, but that looks unlikely. The Serbians face Georgia at home and are heavy favorites.
Serbia sits in first place on 18 points, while Wales has 17 and Ireland has 16. A draw will see the Dragons move on to a playoff against another second-placed team, while Ireland needs to win to move on.
Wales hasn’t had all three of its star players — Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey, and Joe Allen — together for most of this qualifying cycle. That remains the case for this game, with Bale missing out due to injury. The Dragons are also missing veteran defender James Collins. Ireland is a bit thin up top, with Shane Long and Jonathan Walters out hurt. Martin O’Neill has turned to 34-year-old Daryl Murphy, who scored a brace against Moldova last week. But all of the strikers behind him on the depth chart have six or fewer caps, and none have scored an international goal.
