Can Arsenal halt the swing of power in the North London Derby?

The North London Derby has been one of the most hotly-contested rivalries in England the last few years, with the decades-old enmity between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal coming to a head as Spurs have flown up the table in quality and the Gunners have slowly slipped away. Last season saw Tottenham pass up their archrivals in the Premier League table, and there’s a chance that a win here could see them start to put Arsenal away once more.

Arsenal would normally be counting on the home-field advantage that the Emirates Stadium brings to keep them afloat despite their shaky form before the international break, but that hasn’t been the case in recent years. In fact, it’s been a little over four years since the Gunners beat Tottenham at home in the EPL, all the way back in September of 2013 when Olivier Giroud scored their lone goal in a 1-0 early season win.

Since then, it’s been three straight draws at home for the Gunners, who have also only beaten Spurs once in the Premier League since then — though they do have a win in each of the League Cup and FA Cup in that time. But it’s safe to say that Arsenal’s form against their archrivals has slipped badly, and with Tottenham sitting comfortably above them in the table combined with the Gunners’ abysmal form against the better EPL teams this season, there’s plenty of reason for nerves for Arsenal fans right now.

Of particular concern for Arsenal fans is the form of Harry Kane in North London Derby matches, scoring a total of six goals in five consecutive EPL clashes in the Derby. He’s also scored 13 goals in 14 matches across all competitions this season, so it definitely easy to pick him out as the danger man for the Gunners to try to stop — though their defending against top-quality attackers this season has been sorely lacking in quality.

Numerous players are hurt for both teams, with Arsenal missing a trio of starters in Giroud, Danny Welbeck, and Shkodran Mustafi all injured, as well as defensive reserve Calum Chambers. Tottenham Hotspur are getting Erik Lamela back to their bench after a year out injured, but Toby Alderweireld and Victor Wanyama are still out, taking away two key cogs to their defensive efforts.
