While El Clasico grabs all the headlines as one of the best rivalries in the world, Real Madrid have another rivalry that’s produced some classic matches in recent years. El Derbi Madrileño — the Madrid Derby — pits the defending La Liga champions against Atlético Madrid in a cross-town rivalry that has significant meaning in this edition of their decades-long duel.

That’s because the two teams are dead even in the table on points, with Real Madrid holding third place over Atlético by three points of goal differential. A win here for either team will put them in position to challenge second-place Valencia for their standing in the table, while a loss would put them at risk of getting caught by Villarreal and Sevilla and having to fight just to hold onto fourth place.

Atléti have had a weird season so far, actually going undefeated in league action so far this season, but with five draws in their eleven matches thanks to wildly uneven form that’s been flat more often than it’s been amazing. Real Madrid have had a number of big wins over smaller teams, but their own form has been uneven against the bigger clubs they’ve faced, including a humbling defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League just before the international break.

Suffice it to say that neither team is at their best right now — but that could just fuel them to push all the harder in a rivalry clash with important standing in La Liga on the line. Desperation is a helluva thing, and it could make for a fascinating match to watch.

Atlético Madrid are healthy for this match, but their rivals are missing two key players for this match. Real Madrid will be without Gareth Bale and Keylor Navas, two starters key to their normal plans and who they’ve definitely missed of late.
