Real Madrid have not exactly had the smoothest ride this season as they’ve struggled to match last season’s easy dominance. In fact, for long stretches of the season they’ve looked anything but dominant, looking tired and disinterested too many times en route to some bitterly disappointing results. Now as they try to close in on the top two teams in La Liga, Madrid are getting visited by a seriously relegation-threatened side in Malaga.

Gone are the days for Malaga from several years ago when there were hopes of them joining the elite of La Liga. Not only did that plan fail, but the expense of it has put them in intro a troublesome financial situation that’s left them among the weakest sides in Spain’s top division. They’ve won just seven points all season long, and while they do have two wins in their last five matches, those are their only two wins as they’ve been scoring less than a goal per game this campaign.

But Madrid haven’t exactly enjoyed this season either, with a recent loss to Girona staining their record, as well as last weekend’s listless draw against Atletico Madrid. But they did step up when they needed to against APOEL in the Champions League midweek, but there’s still more questions than answers around this squad right now. It still feels like we have yet to see the “real” Real Madrid this season, and their fans would be much, much happier if they found a way to get back to their old selves soon.

Real Madrid have a mixed bag of injury news, with several players potentially returning to action this weekend, including Gareth Bale, Keylor Navas, Mateo Kovacic, and potentially a mask-wearing Sergio Ramos after breaking his nose a week ago. They would likely prefer to let Ramos continue to rest, but with his backup Nacho suspended for this match, he might be forced into action anyways. They’ll also be without young sensation Marco Asencio, who suffered a leg injury that’s kept him out of training this week. Malaga are dealing with injuries as well, in the form of Zdravko Kuzmanovic, Federico Ricca, and Miguel Torres all looking unlikely to play.
