Following a tumultuous summer, Barcelona has finally sorted out its most important piece of business. The club announced on Saturday that Lionel Messi had signed a new contract, running though the 2020-21 season.
Lionel Messi signs new contract with Barcelona until 2021
After countless delays, the deal is finally done.

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu repeatedly stated that Messi’s new contract had been agreed to and signed throughout the fall, but that logistical issues prevented the club from making an announcement and holding a press conference. That worried Barca supporters, who will be thrilled to see this saga end.
Messi was reportedly unhappy with Barca management’s decision-making this summer, which led to the departure of Neymar and pursuits of potential replacements that never arrived. But despite rumors that he was willing to consider offers from elsewhere, Messi has been convinced that Barcelona remains the best place for him to be.
In their announcement, Barcelona detailed Messi’s success and longevity with the club. The numbers are impressive.
And now it appears that Messi will spend the rest of the prime of his career with Barcelona. He’ll be 34 when this contract expires, and by that time might be considering what he’d like to do outside of the top level of European soccer.
