Villarreal have been one of the more entertaining teams to watch in La Liga this year, using their high press and quick counter to rise to sixth place. They’re not really in the race for the Championship League places right now, though — instead, they’re sitting atop a group of teams stretching all the way down to 15th place in the league who are only five points apart.
That minimal room for error has created a chaotic, high-pressure melting pot that Villarreal are thriving in. Instead of getting more conservative to avoid courting disaster, they’ve become a louder version of themselves, becoming an incredibly fun team that’s got the potential to hang with anyone on the right day. Barcelona are obviously the kings of La Liga right now, but they cannot just assume they have this game won or Villarreal can give them a rude surprise.
