Chelsea haven’t quite enjoyed the season they wanted to after winning the Premier League a year ago. Coming up on the halfway point of the season, it’s already starting to look like they’ve fallen out of the title race, but with Southampton coming to Stamford Bridge on Saturday, they have an opportunity to improve their chances somewhat.

Chelsea have a chance to move into second place in the Premier League while piling on to Southampton’s misery.

With a win on Saturday accompanied by a Manchester United loss on Sunday, Chelsea can move even with the Red Devils on points, only trailing them on goal differential. That would still leave them well behind league leaders Manchester City — who would have an eleven point lead in that situation even if they lose this weekend — but it would at least improve Chelsea’s situation compared to where it’s been earlier in the season.
As for Southampton, they sit in 11th place, but their footing isn’t as comfortable as that might seem. They’re just four points clear of the relegation zone and six above last place, a narrow margin of error that has the potential to get a lot smaller with every loss. And the losses have been mounting for the Saints, with just one win in their last eight matches, putting massive pressure on Mauricio Pellegrino in his first season in charge of an English team.
The pressure is on both teams in this match, albeit for very different if both massively important reasons. Who will rise to the occasion and overcome that pressure?
