An old rivalry will be rekindled at Signal Iduna Park on Wednesday, when Germany play host to England in an international friendly. Both sides will be looking to use the fixture as a springboard for this weekend’s World Cup qualifying matches, though there’s always plenty of pride at stake whenever these teams face off.

England boss Gareth Southgate has opted for youth over experience in his squad, with Three Lions captain Wayne Rooney among those omitted entirely. Defender Michael Keane and midfielders Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse are both in line for their first caps.

They’ll go head-to-head with a Germany side boasting plenty of familiar faces: their only potential debutante is Timo Werner, who’s been rewarded for his red-hot form at RB Leipzig with his first call-up.

Three big things to know

1. Germany will be without goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and attackers Mesut Özil, Mario Gómez, and Julian Draxler. However, coach Joachim Löw still has a wealth of options available, with the likes of Thomas Müller, Toni Kroos, and Mats Hummels all expected to play a part.

2. Gareth Southgate initially included West Ham wideman Michail Antonio in his squad, but he withdrawn through injury after the weekend’s defeat to Leicester. Phil Jones has also been ruled out, though Kyle Walker could play a part if he recovers from a wrist injury.

3. England won 3-2 when these sides met last March. Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy, and Eric Dier all netted in the game’s final half hour as Roy Hodgson’s side staged an unlikely late comeback from 2-0 down.
