They’ll look to kickstart their run-in away at struggling Venezuela on Thursday. They’ve won just one of their qualification matches so far, and sit rock bottom of the group on just five points. They’re almost certain to remain the only CONMEBOL side never to make it to a World Cup finals, and can only hope to salvage some pride.

Three big things to know
1. Venezuela’s thumping 5-0 victory over Bolivia on November was their only win in their last eight matches. They were held to a 2-2 draw in the reverse fixture in Lima last Match, with Peru netting a dramatic equalizer in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
2. Never in their history have Peru won away in Venezuela. However, two of their four wins in the current World Cup qualifying campaign have come on the road, with a 4-1 victory away in Paraguay and a 3-0 one in Bolivia.
3. Peru are looking to make it to their first World Cup since 1982, when they were eliminated without winning a single game. Their performance in last summer’s Copa América gives them reason for optimism: they beat Brazil in the United States, and were only eliminated on penalties by Colombia in the quarterfinals. They’re certainly no pushovers.
