The United States have no room for error and absolutely must beat Honduras on Friday — but that’s easier said than done.

The final round of World Cup qualifying in CONCACAF has not treated the United States well so far, with the USMNT finding themselves stapled to the bottom of the Hex table with zero points in two matches. They’re basically out of any room for error, and with a hungry Honduras team coming to San Jose spoiling for a fight, the boys in red, white, and blue are staring at a desperate situation.

This will be Bruce Arena’s first qualifying match during his second stint as the USMNT’s manager, and it’s definitely a trial by fire. His squad looks uneven and much more defensive than you’d want to see, especially thanks to several crucial injuries that deprived him of players like Jordan Morris. A loss here would be absolutely crippling, leaving the USMNT at zero points with seven games to go in the hex.

While in years past Honduras might have been a “gimme” win for the USMNT, this current version of Los Catrachos is anything but. They are fast, they are hungry, and they are sorely underrated by many. They have a young and very capable attack that has carved up many impressive teams on the counter attack in recent years, paired with a bruising defense that will leave the USMNT struggling for space and time in the final third.

That’s a beautiful counter to the things the U.S. try to do, especially playing at home, and there is a very, very good chance that Honduras pops up with a big result here that leaves the United States struggling to find some very difficult answers about what comes next.
